Yea, he finds out that someone is releasing monsters into the world, one of which killed his lover, so he goes hunting for some artifact that can seal the world away from the darkness once more and potentially bring his lover back to life.

After completing his quest and seeign how feeble the world was without heroes, Gabriel dedicated himself to training heroes for the future so that he world would not have to only rest in his hands. Also, wikipedia Castlevania Lords of Shadow so you can learn a little more about his personality.
