AP means it's a college-level course. If you get 3-5 (or 4-5 depending on the college) on the AP exam in May, you get college credit so you don't have to take that class in college.

Why would you not take the test? Then you just wasted the whole year in an AP class. If you take the class but not the test, no college credit.
