Friends, trading and gifting to friends are all features coming soon to Pokémon GO! According to the blog post, it seems that you must be within 100m of a person you are friends with to trade, and also the level of friendship makes it cost less Stardust to trade for rarer and unobtained Pokémon!
Personally I'm very excited about this, because I have a bunch of friends I play Pokémon GO with, and I like that I'll be able to do more with them to play!

A quick update here: Lucky Pokemon have been discovered from trading Pokémon with friends! Do any of you have one yet? I haven’t gotten one, despite trading a bunch on my trip this week.

I love these features and the more in game social aspects they have given us through it. Because the game was social before, but these features really help boost with that.
