I can understand one where I send a low leveled Pokemon and lost, but I'm kind of baffled at having my higher leveled one lose to a lower leveled Pokemon? Maybe I've been used to how the in-game battling works and never thought much about IVs?

Okay, I'm probably going to ask a pretty silly question to some folks but how exactly does the battles work? I can understand the comparison of IVs but how exactly do I increase that for Pokemon I sent in?

IVs are set for a Pokémon as soon as they are hatched. Some of the outcomes of the battles are random, but having better IVs and higher levels play into it too! Either way, both Pokémon gain some Exp. Points for entering the battle.
