On February 27th, 2026, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen will be made available on Nintendo Switch as standalone digital downloads! The prices are $19.99 each in the US, and £16.99 in the UK.

From the website announcement:

Pokémon Day is only a week away, and fans will have something extra to look forward to while celebrating 30 years of Pokémon—the Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version games are coming to Nintendo Switch! These classic remakes of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green will be available to download from Nintendo eShop after the conclusion of the Pokémon Presents beginning Friday, February 27, 2026, at 6:00 a.m. PST.

Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version were originally released for Game Boy Advance in 2004, and this Nintendo Switch release will contain much of the same Kantonian charm. Players will be able to revisit the classic story and Pokémon of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue with the updated graphics you know and love, complete with the excitement of the Sevii Islands introduced in Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version. Players can also look forward to trading Pokémon, battling each other, and more using local communication.

Whether you enjoyed these games over 20 years ago or are picking them up for the first time, we hope Trainers will enjoy exploring the region that got everything started!

Are you planning to get either of these? Did you pre-order it already? What do you like about FRLG? Tell us your thoughts in the replies!

I am planning to get one of these to see how it plays on the Switch, even though I have a few GBA copies already. I think $20 is totally fair considering the price of used FRLG games on eBay right now (over $120...), and potential Home compatibility is a nice addition, plus wireless local multi-player. I'm glad new fans will have the ability to try out these games if they haven't had a chance to get at a reasonable price on a system they already own too.

Do you want to POKéMON with me?

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is an eternal God, the creator of the whole earth. He does not get tired or weary; there is no limit to his wisdom.

I preordered both and I plan to shiny hunt in it even tho it’s a 1/8192 odds, but that’s the thing, these game are the purest when it comes to shiny hunting (Ignoring RNG Abuse and glitches). No boosts or odds increases. Just a flat rate for everything. So shinys in these games are super valuable.

I’m going to start off with the starters which should be easy since you don’t have to progress very much to start the hunt. All other gift Pokémon will be more difficult since I’ll have to play through the game multiple times if I want to shiny hunt them on multiple saves.

Wish me luck because I’ll definitely need it.
