You can now set an avatar and status message for your profile and the memberlist by going here: Edit Account.
I'll be adjusting the styles of those two pages so they fit better with the avatars and status messages soon.
Enjoy! And remember, all the same rules that apply here on the forums for avatars (nothing inappropriate, etc.) also apply on the Adoptables. The only thing that's different is your avatar can be up to 150x150 pixels.

In my opinion, maybe the stats should go above the Pokemon...?
