Most people that have played Pokémon in the last 30 years have at least heard of the Pokémon Mew, Generation 1's Mythical Pokémon. It was only meant to be given out for events, but people quickly discovered that there was a glitch you could perform that allowed you to encounter a Mew without using a GameShark! I remember hearing about this when I was pretty young, but I don't know where I first heard it. Maybe it was from someone at school? Maybe it was from reading Pokémon websites online? Back then there were plenty of random websites with dubious sounding "hints" that were sometimes completely made up, so I often tried them to make sure I could also prove they weren't true! But this one was real!
All you have to do is save first in case you mess up, then walk to where the Gambler is on Route 8, who is facing north towards the Underground Path entrance, and fly away once you walk into their line of sight. Fly to Cerulean City, and battle the Youngster on Route 25 who is facing north and has a Slowpoke on his team. You can't have previously battled either of these trainers in order for this to work. Then, fly back to Lavender Town, walk into Route 8, and your menu will open. Close it, then Mew appears at level 7!
I caught this Mew in every game afterwards that I played from the start.
How did you find the Mew glitch? Do you have any memories of telling your friends about it? Did they believe you?
