I used to play the TCG quite competitively before GX cards game out. Imo they ruined the metagame and I am no longer interested in it especially after Tag Team GX came out and are even more powerful. If you just want to play for fun though just learn the basic rules and don't worry about rotations or anything. There is Pokemon Trading Card Game Online that is free to play and it teaches you all the basics and lets you collect cards and join tournaments online. It's really fun and a great way to learn how to get started

I rarely get into the meta on card games,
Maybe minus Yu-gi-oh!.
I will probably just stick to my shiny charizard for now.
I haven't bought any specific cards for Pokémon (minus Japanese emolga EX)
But I don't have any energy's.
I went into some underground tournaments a while back.
I got wrecked easily by mewtwo Ex and mew.
But in the Yu-gi-oh! Tournament I actually won.
